Scent carries farther than sight for crayfish and crab, so oily baits — fish scraps, chicken necks, commercial bait blocks — hold the set longer than clean fillets. Set on mud and silt bottoms where they feed, check twice a day in warm water, and run traps in a line with one anchor per string so a single hauling pass clears the whole set. Between trips, stack them flat and dry; a trap that is kept dry between soakings is a trap that does not need replacing.
